| The
Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, who worked with Americans
for the Arts and 85 area arts and culture organizations
to spearhead the Arts & Economic Prosperity III study
for Allegheny County, sponsored a community forum to discuss
the study results on July 12, 2007, at the Cabaret at
Theater Square. Randy Cohen, Vice President of Policy
and Research for Americans for the Arts, was the keynote
speaker. Along with Pat Ford, Director of Economic and
Community Development for the City of Pittsburgh and Kathy
McKenzie, Deputy County Manager for Allegheny County,
Cohen lauded the role of the arts in economic development
across the county and the U.S.
"The
information in Arts & Economic Prosperity III sends
a clear and welcome message: leaders who care about
community and economic development can feel good about
choosing to invest in the arts," Cohen said. "AEPIII
is a myth buster. It alters the perception that the
arts are luxuries only worth supporting in prosperous
times but hard to justify when the economy is struggling.
At a time when government leaders at all levels are
making tough budget choices, this study sends an important
message: support for the arts does not come at the expense
of economic development. Rather, it's an industry that
supports jobs, generates government revenue, is the
cornerstone of tourism and economic development and
drives a creativity-based economy."

"Arts
& Economic Prosperity III proves what those of us
in the arts and culture industry know-the arts mean
business," concludes Mitch Swain. "We're looking
forward to helping our member organizations maximize
the benefits of this information in their fundraising
and marketing efforts." The complete report for
