Pittsburgh, PA + Quantum Theatre Front Porch

Quantum Theatre seeks to commission an artist, designer or architect to help us create a…well we don’t really know what to call it. A mobile “front porch,” so to speak. Quantum moves its audience all over the region, which is adventurous and interesting and an integral part of the theatre. But because we do not have a regular performance venue, we seek to add one consistent and unique element – a transportable, collapsible porch/tent/ yurt. We think that the consistency provided by one always present architectural element will serve a wide purpose, acting as an identifier for Quantum, as well as a place where audience members can gather for receptions and conversation. We hope that, as art itself, it will deepen our audience’s experience and connection to Quantum's work.

Deadline: August 13, 2010
Budget: $1,500

Pittsburgh, PA + Society for Contemporary Craft

2011 LEAP Award. The LEAP Award was established in the fall of 2007 to recognize emerging talent in the contemporary craft field. Founded in 1971 by Elizabeth R. Rapheal as the Store for Art and Crafts and People Made Things, SCC featured work by young and emerging artists that needed wider opportunities to exhibit and sell work. Building on this early history, it is our hope that LEAP Award will help young artists move into a career in contemporary craft.

The LEAP Award recognizes excellence in the field of contemporary craft, and is presented biennially. The competition is open to exceptionally talented students and under-represented craft artists.  The jurying process will take place in two sessions.  There will be an initial review of digital images to identify 10-20 finalists.  These finalists will be asked to submit additional images for final jurying, as well as be invited to create and submit work for display throughout the year in the Store.  The final round of judging will take place on December 13, 2010, and the selected artist will receive a $1,000 cash award towards the development of a product line/body of work. In addition, SCC will promote this body of work nationally, and the work will be exclusively marketed through the Store for a period of one year.

Savannah, GA + Writing on the Wall

The act of writing a list, sending a personal letter and even passing a note have become few and far between in the digital age. An e-mail or a text message, however efficient, no longer hold that personal touch. Handwriting is so specific to an individual that this form of expression within itself seems to have been left behind by contemporary telecommunications. Writing style is dynamic: an unfinished work to be modified, revised, and shaped over a lifetime. Writing on the Walls examines and celebrates the personal idiosyncrasies of the art of handwriting through various mediums: letters, notes, grocery lists, and other organic print pieces that continues to exist despite today's increased use of digital methods.

We invite you to join us in our exploration of the ever disappearing art of the written word.

Eligibility: This juried exhibition is open to national and international artists (professional, emerging, and student).

Media/Genre: Open to works of all genres and media.

Entry Fee: You may submit up to three pieces for a non-refundable entry fee of $15. The entry fee may be paid online or with cash, check, or money order (checks and money orders should be made payable to DESOTOROW GALLERY).

Derbyshire, England + Sutton Scarsdale Hall Call for Concepts

With this call for entries, the Centre of Attention is seeking concepts and proposals for the re-imagining of Sutton Scarsdale Hall into a pavilion of postcontemporary curating.  This call is open to architects, designers, artists, curators and others. Concepts and proposals can be submitted as drawings, images or texts, by email to the address listed below.  All ideas, gestural, utopian or pragmatic are welcome.  At this stage we need to raise an initial £1,250,000. Fundraiser launch in London: late Autumn 2009

The skeletal remains of Sutton Scarsdale Hall continue to decay. A dilapidated wreck of a structure, you enter at your own risk.  In the very heart of England, Sutton Scarsdale Hall is to become the Pavilion of Postcontemporary Curating.

What is a pavilion of postcontemporary curating? First it will be a new international art facility set in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside. The current Hall is a perfect exhibition/ performance space, lit from above, with high walls, neutral floor. It will be dedicated solely to new curating. Second, the Pavilion of Postcontemporary Curating will be a sculptural work incorporating the remains of Sutton Scarsdale Hall.  Third, the pavilion of postcontemporary curating will provide a home for the Centre of Attention and its archive.

The space will have a special remit to act as a 'patron' to working class artists and curators by providing these facilities for free.  It will facilitate new media production as well as old, it will have a library, archive, research facilities and study resource, studios and accommodation as well as a gallery dedicated to the history of the house.  A sculpture, it will become part of the regional landscape and act as a beacon to advanced ideas and art praxis in the regional and international scene.

Timetable for the pavilion: (2009) secure the remains of the building. ACT NOW to stop the decay; source architects through competition and re-imagine the site; recruitment and announcement of Advisory Board (2010) construction of sculpture/art centre (2011) completion and inaugural exhibition and residency.

Den Haag, The Netherlands + Marcello’s Art Factory/URM Project

An Urban Ready Made (URM) is a street, a building, a view, an object or an event in an urban- or industrial environment, where a conjunction of circumstances cause beauty and art. When an artist or architect declares this (with some ritual proceedings) art, it becomes an Urban Ready Made.  With the Urban Ready Mades Project we would like to bring art closer to people. Art doesn't have to be difficult to understand. You can find beauty everywhere and to enjoy art you don't have to visit a museum or an exposition. We hope our project lets people realize that they can find art and beauty in their own city.
Marcello & Els, the founders of the project, want to give other artists and architects a chance to declare an URM in their own surroundings and join this unique concept. This way there will grow a "gesammtkunstwerk" (a collective work of art) of thousands of URM's, which will go beyond borders. Firstly this is going to take place in the form of a virtual exhibition on the World Wide Web, crossing virtual borders. In the year 2010 it will become a traveling exhibition, kicking off in The Hague.

Washington D.C. + Transportation Research Board 90th Annual Meeting: Call for Papers

Papers are requested to show how the promotion, planning, and development of arts projects can create a more humane, connected, beautiful, and relevant transportation system, and how investments in art in transportation help to economically revitalize and stabilize communities in which the transportation system is located. The Committee claims the streetscape, station area, and all passenger transport facilities as part of its territory, as the canvas upon which art in transportation is painted or sculpted. Papers documenting a transformative effect are of particular interest to the Committee. In proposing papers, consider that art can be planning, urban design, architecture, fine art, signage, and commercial art. The TRB Annual Meeting is January 23-27, 2011.

Papers are invited to provide guidance on holding competitions for art in transportation. A paper could address structuring the competition, working with local arts organizations, featuring and compensating the artists, displaying and reproducing winning entries, and using the competition to raise awareness of importance of walking, biking and transit in the community. Papers may focus on art-friendly planning, policies, and implementation guidelines in use by cities and transportation agencies. A paper could highlight important provisions while summarizing and synthesizing a group of existing guidelines. Papers may focus on the cost, cost-benefit, funding, and support for art in transportation in the law.

As a Subcommittee of the Intermodal Transfer Facilities Committee, the explorations and studies produced under the umbrella of the Subcommittee on Art in Intermodal Transfer Facilities will be inclusive of all transportation modes and place high value on multimodalism and intermodalism. Participation and contributions pertaining to any transportation mode and any aspect of art in transportation are welcome.

Authors submitting papers in response to this Call for Papers should submit full papers for peer review to the Transportation Research Board online at the website below. Recognizing some quantitative progress in equity and diversity issues over the last three to four decades, it is most urgent at this historic time of change to evaluate and set forth action-agendas around TAAC's foundational pillars for real, substantive, long-term change.

TAAC convenes artists and cultural workers that are reflective of our pluralistic society to inform and advocate for democratic cultural policy.

Deadline: Register now for August 12-14, 2010
