Come together with arts managers from around the region to answer the vital question: In what ways can arts marketers and arts educators work together to grow Pittsburgh’s arts audience? The evening features hands-on fun in the Children’s Museum’s newest exhibition Pittsburgh: Yinz Play, followed by a rousing, participatory workshop designed to get all the ideas on the table for cross-sector, silo-busting collaboration. Because if there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that we’d like there to be more fish in the arts audience pond.

Pittsburgh, PA + August Wilson Center Fellows

The August Wilson Center for African American Culture has created a fellows program designed to support the needs of local African American artists. Selected artists for the second class of Fellows will be provided with new venues to create and present their performances, pursue individualized career advancement, participate in collaborative creative and marketing projects, strengthen community connection, acquire financial services and collect a regular stipend. Artists may be in any of the following disciplines: media arts, music composition and performance, performance-based arts or visual arts.

Flagstaff, AZ + The Museum of Northern Arizona Artist-In-Residence Program
The Artist-In-Residence Program at the Museum of Northern Arizona (MNA) offers professional writers, composers, and visual and performing artists the opportunity to pursue their artistic discipline, while immersed in the inspiring landscape of northern Arizona and the Colorado Plateau. Artists stay in a historic home on the grounds of the Museum and have access to studio facilities. The three-week residency, which typically takes place during September or October, also offers artists access to the Museum’s library and collections for research. Artwork created as a result of the residency will characterize the Colorado Plateau for present and future generations and offer Museum visitors an opportunity to see MNA’s heritage through the creations of participating artists. Artists’ work will be exhibited or presented through performance at the Museum within two years of the completion of their residency.

Pittsburgh, PA + Artist Opportunity Grants, Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council
Artist Opportunity Grants can cover expenses directly related to a unique professional opportunity. Opportunities must take place no sooner than one month after the deadline and must be completed within six months.

An opportunity may be one of many things - An invitation to exhibit at a prestigious gallery, to audition for a major dance company, to study with a mentor or renowned teacher. It might be juried in some way or available only through a competitive selection process. In any case, it should not duplicate experiences the artist has had in the course of his or her ongoing work, and it must lead to professional growth in the artist's career in a clear and meaningful way.

Beginning in 2010, applications will be considered twice per year. Postmark deadlines will be March 1 and September 1. Postmark deadlines that fall on a holiday or Sunday are extended to the next business day.

Grants range from $250-$1,500.

New York, NY + Keyholder Residency Program

The Keyholder Residency Program offers emerging artists free 24-hour access to printmaking facilities to develop new work and foster their artistic careers. Residencies are free and one year long, starting on April 1st and October 1st each year, and they take place in the shared  Artists’ Studio, including the solvent/etching area and the darkroom.

San Jose, CA + Green Prix Micro-Grant Open Call

The 3rd 01SJ Biennial will take place September 16-19, 2010 in San Jose, CA. The theme of the Biennial is Build Your Own World. The 01SJ Biennial is an increasing recognized international event and a premiere multidisciplinary arts festival in North America. As such, 01SJ represents a unique opportunity to present the groundbreaking work of local and international artists and to provide access to innovative, world-class art for a broad and diverse California audience.

The Green Prix will be an innovative venue for artists to produce and showcase projects that not only celebrate but challenge sustainable locomotion to reach new limits. It manifests through an “eco-motion” parade, public workshop, family oriented green activities, and a music program. Sustainable transportation is not only about being “green”, but also challenging the norm of how we move about and travel. ZER01 is inviting artists and artist teams to apply for a micro-grant towards the creation of an eco-themed project that will take part in the Green Prix parade, Saturday September 18th. Artists are challenged to imagine not just what is next, but work to ensure what’s next matters.

ZER01 is soliciting proposals from artists and artist teams to participate in the Green Prix parade during the 2010 San Jose Biennial.

Budget: Micro-grants are available up to $500. The grant can be applied towards project materials, production, travel, etc.

Emmanuel College in Boston will be offering a summer artists residency program for four artists. We will seek one artist from each of the following categories: ceramics; printmaking; photography; and non-specified medium but related in some way to issues of social justice.

The All Roads Seed Grant Program funds film projects by and about indigenous and underrepresented minority-culture filmmakers year-round and from all reaches of the globe. The program seeks filmmakers who bring their lives and communities to light through first-person storytelling.

New York, NY + Studio Residency Program for Emerging Visual Artists and Writers

Workspace is a nine-month studio residency program for emerging visual artists and writers focused on the creative process. Residents receive free studio space in Lower Manhattan for nine months, a modest one-time stipend (depending on funding), access to a community of peers, meetings and studio visits with arts and literary professionals, and exposure to new audiences through open studios and other public programs. Information sessions: Wednesday, February 17, 4PM at 125 Maiden Lane and Wednesday, March 10, 7PM at 125 Maiden Lane.

Grand Canyon, AZ + Grand Canyon National Park Residency

Whether you are a traditionalist in the vein of Thomas Moran or a contemporary artist creating new paths towards understanding both environmental and cultural issues, you are welcome here. The Artist-in-Residence Program offers professional artists the opportunity to spend three weeks on either the North or South Rim of Grand Canyon in housing provided by the National Park Service. The North Rim AiR program is seasonal, with six residencies during the spring, summer, and fall. The South Rim AiR program is year-round, providing twelve artist opportunities.

Sheboygan, WI + John Michael Kohler Arts Center Residencies

The Studio of The Corning Museum of Glass and the John Michael Kohler Arts Center announce a joint artist in residency program. Artists will be able to spend one month at The Corning Museum Studio and two-six months in Kohler Co.'s foundry (casting iron or brass) or pottery (slip casting clay). Artists need to have experience working with glass but they do not need experience working with clay or metal. Proposals must incorporate a unified project using the resources available from both institutions. Travel, accommodations, supplies, equipment, technical assistance, food stipend are all provided.

The Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council and the August Wilson Center for African American Culture are pleased to host Kennedy Center President Michael Kaiser on Wednesday, April 21 as part of the nationwide tour, Arts in Crisis: A Kennedy Center Initiative. The Initiative is a response to the emergency facing arts organizations throughout the United States. Mr. Kaiser created the initiative in February 2009 and embarked on a national speaking tour of all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia through August 2010. He speaks on the areas of fundraising, building more effective Boards of Trustees, budgeting, marketing, technology, and other areas pertinent to maintaining a vital arts organization during a troubled economy.

Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts + Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council

Artists living in Allegheny County with an annual income of <$27,075 are eligible for assistance through Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA). VLA provides low-income artists with pro bono assistance for arts-related legal needs.  VLA attorneys assist with copyright, contract, intellectual property and other needs.
