Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council Announces Grant Awards for Local Artists


Artist Opportunity Grants go to 10 local artists, totaling $14,980 in professional development funds

Pittsburgh - April 18, 2018 - Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council announced $14,980 in awards in the April 2018 round of Artist Opportunity Grants, which will support artists in accessing professional development opportunities to support their creative careers. Ten artists were awarded grants ranging from $680 – $2500 for technical needs, travel, lodging, and presentations associated with improving their art practice. Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council awards Artist Opportunity Grants three times a year through a panel comprised of local arts professionals. The purpose of the grants is to remove financial barriers between artists and critical experiences that will advance artistic careers. The next deadline for Artist Opportunity Grants is May 21, 2018 at 11:59pm. Artists who are 18 years or older, not enrolled in an undergraduate art degree program and live in the following counties may apply: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Mercer, Lawrence, Somerset, Venango, Washington and Westmoreland.   • $2,500 to Robyn Long to help with tuition and travel to attend the Bologna International Opera Academy
  • $800 to Nikita Zook to help with travel expenses to attend the Risograph Basics Workshop in Portland, Oregon
  • $1,300 to Maybe Sadeghi to help with transportation, installation, and documentation for a commissioned sculpture at the Greenbank Observatory in West Virginia
  • $1,800 to Mathew Conboy to help with expenses to study with master digital photography printer Caleb Marcus, in New York City
  • $680 to Katie Johnson to study wood fired kilns at Touchstone Center for Crafts
  • $1,600 to Saige Baxter to help with expenses to attend Buinho Artist Residency in Messejana, Portugal
  • $1,500 to Vanessa Adams to help with expenses to attend an Instructional Residency in Metal Etching at La Ceiba Grafica, Vera Cruz, Mexico
  • $1,300 to Maria Eugenia Nieves Escoriaza to help with travel expenses and fees for traditional bomba dance instruction, in Puerto Rico
  • $2,000 to Anthony Mitchell to help with travel expenses and fees to study with Conjunto Folkloric de Cuba, in Havana, Cuba
  • $1,500 to Anna Thompson to help with travel expenses and lodging during residency with Springboard Danse Montréal
